How can a photo reveal where it was taken?
Most phones and cameras embed the GPS coordinates of the shutter location directly into the image file as EXIF metadata, along with the exact capture time and the camera/phone model. This tool reads that data and plots the location on a map.
Is my image uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. The image is read in your browser, sent once to extract its metadata, parsed in-memory, and discarded. We never store the photo or the location.
Why does my photo show no location?
Most social networks (Instagram, Facebook, X, WhatsApp) strip GPS metadata when you upload, for privacy. Photos taken straight from a phone or camera and shared as the original file usually keep it. If there's no GPS, there's nothing to plot.
How do I stop my photos leaking my location?
Disable location tagging in your camera app's settings, or strip metadata before sharing. On most phones you can share 'without location' from the photo's options. Assume any original photo you send privately may carry your GPS.
